Robert Morris was admitted to the Suffolk Bar in 1847 becoming the second African American lawyer in the nation. He served a diverse white and black clientele from his State Street office. In the early 1850s, Morris became a judge of a magistrate court in Boston and in Chelsea. As a community leader, Morris was active in desegregating Boston’s public schools, promoting equal rights for African Americans, and supporting the anti-slavery movement.
