Effectively ran an employment agency out of The
Liberator office for more than twenty years.
Nell placed advertisements in Garrison's weekly
newspaper for African Americans seeking employment
and sometimes for employers seeking employees. He
also promoted black entrepreneurial careers through
occasional articles in the weekly, such as “Business
Enterprise of Colored People in Boston” and
“Colored Artisans.” Nell dedicated his
life to the integration of African Americans into
American society and culture. He contributed as an
anti-slavery journalist, Garrisonian abolitionist
activist, and Boston intellectual.
